Sorry for the late reply but I sent this to one of the original
posters without also specifying the ale mailing list!!!
This is an interesting problem that I have to deal with too. The only
safe solution is to umount all NFS mounts before shutting down. If
you cross-mount between systems due to possibly having many machines
with small drives rather than one high capacity NFS server, then you
MUST umount NFS mounts before shutting down any of the machines. The
soft option is not recommended since data can be lost and files
ruined. I would highly recommend, just as the experts who wrote the
O'Reilly book on NFS and NIS, to only hard mount NFS mounts. "Expect"
is an ideal tool to script SSH connections that would su to root and
umount NFS mounts before shutting down. Make a topology map of your
NFS mounts so you know which machines are dependent on your Linux box
and vice versa. Good luck,
Dow
PS. Expect scripts stil rely on passwords buried in scripts unless
written to accept the input at the time you run them. So I don't
recommend putting the root password in any script!
