Emacs first downloads the headers. As you come to each header it down
loads the whole message if you want to read it. (Actually, it can do
some nice caching, now.

Look at the info file on gnus. Once you've pointed gnus at your newss
server, all you do is M-x gnus. Then space-bar will start you
reading messages.
