Might be a motherboard issue. I have the same problem on a HP
Pavilion 6460 (I forgot what motherboard/chipset it uses). Here
is what I see:
1) Occassionally, my boot will hang and I need to power cycle
the box to get it to boot again.
2) When it reboots this time, it will stop at the self test
and give a message saying the boot process was incomplete
and I can hit "F2 to resume" or "F1 to enter setup".
3) If I press F2 then it will come to the LILO prompt. Whether
I choose to boot Win98 or Linux, the machine will crawl!!!
4) At this point I can reboot with Ctl-Alt-Del and the machine
will reboot perfectly now.
If I were asked to explain this problem in an interview, I
would probably try to explain it as follows. I think the newer
motherboards have programmable clock chips (as opposed to real
crystal oscillators earlier). If that were the case, I would
hazarad a guess that during the boot process, the clock chip
does not get initiliazed correctly, thus slowing down the
whole machine.
I tried contacting HP's pathetic attempt at customer support
but they were of no help. So I just added it to other problems
I have to live with like global warming, ozone layer depletion,
etc.Anyone care to comment on this?
Thanks
