I've had my cable modem for 2 weeks now, and it has always been very
slow. I think the problem is doing name lookups. Certainly,
bandwidth isn't the problems as even in peak hours I get 40 KByte/sec
downloads.
Here's the symptom. Name lookups are slow. If I run nslookup it
takes a couple of seconds to return an address.
Here's the weird part: If I run nslookup in two windows, then type a
name in each window, the first one returns the instant I enter the
name in the second one. And if the second one is waiting, it also
returns instantly when a name is entered into the second one.
If I don't enter the name in the other window, lookups take a long
time.
I'm running a stock redhat 6.1 on a 486DX4-100 laptop. It is acting
as a masquerading router and the same behavior occurs on machines on
my subnet.
Ideas?
thanks,
