I am setting up a 486DX/33 for use as a DLC firewall and as you may well
imagine, that means more than one NIC needs to be involved. Ultimately
I want to have three but for starters I'm just trying to get two to
work.
I have two different kinds of NE2000 compatibles. One is an IBM and the
other...I got NO idea, but the chipset indicates NE200-compat. I
managed to download a config floppy for the IBM card.
I did an RH6.0 install with the other NIC in place. The install
detected it as an NE2000 at 0x300 and IRQ 11. When the install
completed and I booted up, everything appeared to be in order although I
did not actually test the operation of the card.
So as not to bore you with details I can't remember clearly anyway, what
I tried to do in a nutshell is put the IBM card in and used its config
floppy to set it to 0x320 and IRQ 5. I then went into linuxconf (no X
on this box) and set up an eth1.
The first thing I noticed wrong is that changing IRQ and I/O for eth1 in
linuxconf changed the settings for eth0 and vice versa, which was pretty
maddening. I eventually figured out that those settings seemed to be
stored in /etc/conf.modules, but when I modified conf.modules in a way
that seemed to make sense to set up eth1, still it wouldn't work.
I tried doing things like reversing the IRQ and I/O settings for eth0
and eth1 and swapping them between slots. At one point, I was able to
get an [ OK ] at boot time for one of eth0 or eth1 but not the other.
I'd be happy to start over and carefully notate my steps if doing so
would help any of you fine people to help me, but at this juncture, I'd
really just like to know if there are any big fat DUH-type things I'm
missing when it comes to putting multiple NICs in a machine under RH
6.0. I'm laboring under the assumption that since I am using two
NE2000-compatible cards that the ne module is sufficient for both. I
suppose I should attempt a proper test of each card individually (i.e.,
actually connecting them to something) before proceeding.
