After using laptops wuite a bit over the past year, all else being
equal, I'd rather have an LCD than a CRT, but I have to agree: the cost
just ain't worth it! However, I would give myself the following caveat
to that statement aside from the obvious space consideration: power
consumption and heat generation.
At my previous employer, I was working on replacing five SVGA CRT
monitors and something like six CRT terminals with just two 15" panels
using a dual-head KVM switch, a Linux box with a Cyclades serial I/O
card, etc., etc. I was looking for ways to extend the run time of the
production systems in the data center in the event of a power failure
and reduce the rate at which the temperature would rise inside the data
center. LCD monitors filled the bill, especially since they needed to
be available until the bitter end when the UPS died. Unfortunately, my
boss rejected the idea out of hand; he considered the political
implications of ANYONE having an LCD screen (never mind that for almost
all of the time, no one would be sitting there actually using them) to
outweigh the practical considerations.
LCDs also rock for rack-mount applications, portable or otherwise.
