Mingetty would work if you are at 9600 8-N-1. But mingetty has no code for
termios settings so all changes would have to be made using stty. But that
may not be such a bad idea!!!

I set HyperTerminal to 9600-8-n-1 and flow control to 'none'.
Everything is great until such time as I get a login prompt on tty1
and then molasses sets in.
OTOH, a serial connection to ttyS0 vi a inittab call:
S0:23:respawn:/sbin/mingetty ttyS0
works flawlessly...I'd have to say at this point that my hardware
is setup correctly and that the problem lay somewhere in the code.
