So I'm signing up for BellSouth's FastAccess ADSL service, noting their
free install + free modem special for DiY'ers. After I filled out the web
form, I called up the toll-free number to schedule an appointment, or in my
case, schedule a non-appt. When the CSR quizzed me about whether or not I had
Win98 w/USB, I said I'd rather go the NIC route, since it works under Linux.
He then said that the DiY special is valid only for the USB modem option.
So I asked him which USB modem, and he said Efficient 3060. I then asked him
what the NIC option would use, and he replied that it was an Alcatel. I then
told him to hold off on the order so I could perform "due diligence". He was
very polite, as CSRs are trained to be. :)
So I looked at Efficient's product offerings, and saw that the 3060 was
actually a PCI modem, but their 4060 was USB. I also looked at Alcatel's
offerings, and saw that they had USB modems as well as external (NIC).
So ... is anyone by chance using Efficient 4060 or some other USB-based DSL
modem under Linux through BellSouth, or any other DSL provider? Or am I
better off trying to find a NIC-based bargain somewhere else?
Thanx,
