Thought I'd rescue this message, buried by an avalanche of Exchange-related
messages... ;-)
I went on quite a hunt after getting a similar problem. I forget where I
finally found an explanation, but it was listed as one of several odd
symptoms attributable to bad memory.
I don't mean "bad" in the sense of "broken" but in the sense of "not good"
for the mobo in question. One complainant hit the problem in the middle of
kernel compiles. It turns out that few things make a system work harder
than kernel compiles, BUT I would imagine that VMware is one of those things
that would definitely push a machine into right up there.
I have a machine here (P/120MMX) with 64MB in four SIMMs that was acting
that way, and, sure enough, kernel compiles were one of several things that
would put it over the edge. After I found the aforementioned writeup on the
Web, I tried running it with the 2nd pair of SIMMs removed and now I can
pull stunts like running Netscape five times without getting into the weeds.
The firewall machine I'm working on at home was doing the same thing, plus a
lot of disk-related problems even though the new partitions always passed
their bad block check at format time. It couldn't stay up for but a few
hours at a time without going raunchy like that. Night before last, I
bounced the machine down from 40MB to 16MB (leaving only 1 SIMM in) and it's
still going.
A few years ago, I had a similar experience under NT, when a box I was
building wouldn't stay running with all four of its SIMMs in place. Any two
of the four by themselves would work fine. The mobo vendor who also sold me
the RAM chalked it up to a bad RAM/mobo match and sent me another mfgr's RAM
and I never had another problem with it - it ran for weeks and weeks at a
stretch.
