Well, I recently went thorugh the same thing - and I lost.

We had a working Pegasus email system on our Novell Network.

For those that don't know, Pegasus is a FREE email system, so

like sendmail/Linux, current costs were nothing.  Heck, my internet

email server ran on a Pentium 75 with 64M of RAM.

However, the boss was tired of all his "friends" saying "why don't

you run Outlook."  I couldn't really compete with that.

It has been a few months, and I still hate that POS.  It is dog

slow on a PII-500 with 512M RAM. (Can somebody tell me why

I also need a 500M swap file????)  Administration is a great big

pain.  However, my boss said, "I don't care about administration"

so that one does not fly very well.  I don't remember our software

license costs but I think it was more that the machine cost.

Part of my boss's thinking was for integrated messaging.

Well, they vendor couldn't get that to work properly.  

We would still have to keep duplicate copies of our contacts,

much like we have to with our FaxPress system.

It was a nightmare.  We told them to remove the integrated messaging

system but I am still stuck with Exchange :(

Did I mention all of the viruses I now get.  Oh Joy.  That PrettyPark

or whatever got us pretty good.  I just love it.

Then there is the fact that nobody really uses the "extra" features of

Outlook.   The main ones people use are the calendar and contacts.

Which you could get a better calendar/contact program for less than

you would pay for Exchange.  One funny note - one day power went

out for a couple of hours, guess how many people couldn't remember 

their appointments, phone numbers, etc for that day.  Needless to say,

many of them went back to the good ol' paper calendar.
