Some of us (including myself) happily run Linux on Toshiba Laptops.
The courts have decided that all Toshiba laptops with internal floppy drives
(manufactured from January 1, 1985 except for those manufactured after
November 8, 1999 with a serial number ending in the letter "U") are affected.
Regardless of how old it is, the owner can get a certificate worth $100
towards the purchase of any Toshiba product (including new units, batteries,
etc.)
>From their site you can download a software patch for the OS of your choice,
*including* many Linux distributions, including my version of Slackware,
and BSD. Once I figured that mine was a Tecra (that name appears nowhere
on my unit or doc) the download went well. I haven't installed it but
it's a module that gets dropped in.
If your unit still is under warranty you have the option also to either
send your unit in for the bad Floppy Disk Controller chip to be replaced
or to receive an external floppy disk drive to use.
All you need to do is to send your name & mailing address to them to
request a claim form. It doesn't matter that it is out of warranty.
You can get a PDF file of the form from the web site or leave your name
& addr on the phone number answering machine and "they'll mail you the form".
I would not bother with the phone number.
In my letter requesting a claim form I mentioned that I might not have
bothered if they hadn't refused to refund people's Windows license fees
on unopened packages.
