I have another observation.
As a former Amiga user, I remember a device made by Expansion Systems
called an XDS. The XDS was a mechanism for putting a second HDD on an
Amiga 600 or 1200, both of which used an internal 2.5" HDD (both of these
computers had extremely small footprints--the entire computer was under
the keyboard to the point that many users were expecting an Amiga laptop
to appear before Commodore went under).
The essence of it was this: They would provide you with a box that you
would set near your computer, into which you would mount a 3.5" HDD of
your choosing. On the back of the box was a header. Into this header,
you would plug a 48-pin cable, (44 of which were the 2.5" IDE, the
remainder were additional power connections). The other end of this cable
had four plugs on it. One plug went to the motherboard where the internal
HDD plugged in, one went to the internal HDD, and the remaining two
replaced the power connection between the motherboard and the internal
FDD, in order to provide extra current (and I think also a +12V supply) to
the 3.5" HDD.
If anyone out there has one of these, it would seem to me that it may find
new life attached to one of these I-opener systems. Of course, you will
have to poke around inside to find a +12V supply due to the lack of an
FDD, but I'm sure it can be done....
