for simplicity, I have a similar setup. I just used
SLIP and a null modem for direct connection then
dropped in dip when I had to break the connections with modems
setup a routing on powerup
and setup the security so if the account existed on both
systems, rlogin would do a direct transfer, otherwsie
telnet worked just as good.
