I've got Oracle 8i on RH6. It refused to load from the
CD's saying it couldn't find the file. I used the
downloaded tar file and got it to run. You have to
recompile the kernel to get all the parameters set
and you really do need 128 megs of memory. With any
less, don't ask it to create a database at install
time. It spawns another version of it's Java install
tool to do it and crashes. And you will need the
exact Java version the docs ask for.
I found it a difficult and lengthy task, but I did
manage to finally get it working after messing with
it for about a month. I set it up on a test system
and recommend doing it that way if possible. Oracle
sponsors some discussion groups that were very
helpful to me. There are links on their web site.
If you need Oracle because you need to learn Oracle
for work or something, as I did, you can get it done.
If you are just looking for a functioning database,
I would use mySql.
