I also have an HSP Micromodem v.90 K56. A quick look at the "modem"
shows a couple of capacitors and resistors, plus a small IC.
Not a modem at all, just a tone generator, which depends upon the processor
to do its work. Problem with that is, it takes up about 98% of the
processor's
cycles just to handle the modem.
Not good for multi-users, etc.
You'll have to get at real modem to use with Linux.
