I know someone who got the instalation tech to just install the modem
without installing on any single system. He then plugged the modem
into the uplink port on a hub. then any single machine in his house
could be on the net, but only one at a time. Ultimately he installed
a linux router.
He learned that up to 5 MAC addresses could be used. His network
connection stopped working when he tried his 6th lan card, until he
called up MediaOne.
OTOH, he has been on MediaOne for about a year, so he was one of the
early users. A lot has changed since then. (For instance, they now
have bandwidth filters on the modems. With his old modem he can get
over 400 KBytes (not bits) a second.
