Well, thanks to you all thus far; you've pretty much answered the
questions! Here's one or two more:
Someone said it was 3Com modems. Since I work for 3Com, I can
probably buy a modem at a discount; which models do they use? Or are
things still in flux to the point that I shouldn't buy one?
Someone else started the usual DSL vs CATV debate. Here in Boston,
for under $50, there are one DSL and one CATV vendor (actually two in
certain areas); MediaOne is significantly better than these other
inexpensive services in terms of latency, throughput, and local
interconnection (all have miserable customer service). Is there any
clearly superior alternative to MediaOne? Geographically speaking,
this would be right near Rocky's Pizza on Peachtree Street--sort of
below Buckhead, I guess; I understand there are a variety of
Peachtrees in town...

A number of people have suggested this. Is it real? Every installer
I've ever had up here didn't blink an eye at my wholly non-Windows
systems, and indeed several said that they run Linux themselves.
Has anyone had installs while not running Windows? It seems a bit
daft that I'd have to have a Windows license just for an install
period. I guess I'll play it safe and see about finding a Windows
CD.
Oh, someone thought I was moving down there. This isn't quite the
case: I'm coming down for a weekend to set my mom up with a Linux PC.
She's absolutely computer illiterate, so there's no way I can give her
a Windows box.
