You really think that its the government imposed regulation that makes
phone companies better than cable?!?!? Ahem - its despite these
regulations that the phone companies are better equipped to maintain
their services and infrastructure. Businesses are dependent upon their
phone systems always working, if it rains and your cable goes out -
big deal. Phone companies route millions of connections supporting
full duplex real time communications all over the world, cable
companies pipe a unidirectional stream nearly identical to a broadcast
tower except over a wire and only to local neighborhoods.
Additionally, your argument is flawed. Cable companies work under
local government controlled and regulated monopolies that are even
less competitive environments than what phone companies operate
presently. You can scream at your local council and get more done than
an individual could ever get done at a large government agency that is
lobbied constantly by large companies.
Its the market that these companies operate in that determines how
competitive and competent they will be. Cable companies are learning
about maintaining infrastructure and improving quality of service but
they've still got a way to go. Presently, phone companies have the
edge in this area although both industries have too many people stuck
in obsolete thinking to keep up with the current market and its
potential. Soon bandwidth will be effectively free. Your cost will be
in basic connectivity and how big your own pipe can get. Before this
happens, however, local infrastructures and back bone support are
going to have to grow up a bit more.
