Just to provide a data point, installing an NT workgroup file and print

server for 50-100 users is something I can do in about a couple hours,

starting from a blank machine and presuming I have some printers to set up

for Win95/98 clients (and I remembered how!!).  If my kung-fu were up to

par, I could probably do the same thing in the same amount of time (although

past a certain point I could do the configging remotely via SWAT) under

Linux/Samba.  This Drew Sullivan sounds like he's speaking with the mouth of

someone who bills by the hour!!

A really good Linux admin would have already set up a distro for access over

the network (acknowledging that the same can be done with NT) and, after,

getting Linux installed on the target machine, would recompile the kernel

and modules to take the memory footprint down and make use of CPU

enhancements, and would probably also recompile Samba.  He/She would have

left out X for sake of memory conservation and thrown out all the daemons

that weren't needed.  Might have put in ssh and whatever would have been

needed to use SWAT (Apache?  I don't remember).  Would use software RAID if

no RAID controller HW were present or available (same for NT).
