I have two 6.4G IBM drives in an old Intel Pentium90 based system.. One of the
drives is configured through the BIOS and Linux sees what the BIOS provides as
a translated c/h/s configuration to it. The second drive is not configured in
the BIOS in any way and Linux queries directly to the hardware, finds out what
it is, and uses it. Neither posed any kind of problem for Linux.
On my desktop system I have two other IBM drives, a 22GXP and a 20G 34GXP.
This is using a more current Tyan 1832DL motherboard.. but installation was
simple: no problems, no work-arounds required.
The ability for Linux to easily and reliably handle these low-cost,
high-capacity EIDE drives (and use UDMA bus mastering modes as well!) has
allowed me to ditch SCSI completely and just use EIDE..
