Methinks BS is giving you some BS there. I contacted the ISP
(I found them via dslreports.com) that offered IDSL. They get
physical connectivity through Covad. Covad is one of the CLEC's
(Competitive Local Exchange Carrier) that got created by whatever
Telecom Act of whenever a few years back. Basically Covad resells
services over plant they lease/resell from BellSouth, and the ISP gets
connectivity to you through Covad.
Of course this means that Covad is pretty much at the mercy of
BS to get the physical line installed. In my case it was over three
months from the time I ordered service from the ISP (back first of
November) until the line finally went live (around the first of
February). I got email four days before BS was supposed to have my
line connected saying there were problems on BS' side and they'd
[Covad] contact me when there was a new commit date. Nothing happend
with BS until I finally called the ISP a month later and they got
someone at Covad to poke whomever at BS. It then took no less than
eight visits from BS before they finally got the line up and working.
I don't really fault the ISP, and only blame Covad for not
riding BS harder for taking as long as they did. Just keep the fact
that it may take a while if you don't go through BS. Of course you
probably will get more flexibility and services from the ISP as well
(I've got 4 static IP's, a shell account, and I'm hosting my own
domain off my own boxes at home with no additional cost).
