According to my agreement with Mindspring DSL there is 20 hours of dialup
available per month. I have been happy with the service for the most part,
and get from 40K to 70K depending. I get disconnected every now and then,
but it's not too bad. Mindspring will help somewhat with Linux if you find
someone that knows it but they don't officially support it. I am now
looking into my options because I am moving to the Roswell area from
downtown, so this thread has been very informative. It will be an
apartment, though, and they have a company that handles cable modem. Can
you pick the cable company in that instance ...pj

You would have to go their website to confirm this, but I
think I remember reading that Mindspring offered this as a
feature of their DSL service, for the purpose you just mentioned.
