I get my DSL from speakeasy.org. They have excellent support and provide
free dialup when the DSL link is down. They use Covad Communications and a
recent fiber cut had the link down for a couple of hours. I am to far from
the CO for ADSL so I actually have IDSL which is 144K. My measured
throughput on the link varies from 128K to 135K and the latency is much
better than dial-up so I'm pretty happy. Speakeasy is very Linux friendly
and provides you with up to for static IP addresses. I have co-workers who
have cable service with both Charter and Media-One. Those with Charter are
very happy and indicate support is very good, those with Media-One indicate
that installers are clueless about anything but Windows and service is poor.
I would say your selection will depend a lot on where you are located and
what is available to you. I couldn't get cable from my location and was too
far from the CO for ADSL, so I settled for IDSL. If you are close enough to
your CO for ADSL a good Linux friendly ISP such as speakeasy would probably
be better than Media-One, but if you can get service from Charter they are
worth checking out also.
