I would have to answer the question as "It depends". Being someone whose
had both services in the Roswell area, I would actually have to say that it
depends:
For DSL:
How far away from the Central Office are you. I was several miles away from
the Central Office and I rarely received over 40 K bytes/sec(It's better
than a 56K modem but..). I also was disconnected at least once an hour. I
also was told by Bellsouth Dot Net that they didn't support Linux. I
validated this by looking at the modem manufacturers web page. They
basically stated that they didn't support the open source movement. I have
heard differing stories about Mindspring. If you are on fiber, the Central
Office is not as much of an issue. I have some friends using the fiber DSL
and they often get 130 K bytes/sec.
For Cable:
Reliability. I have been with Cablevision(now Charter Communications in
Roswell) for about a year and have been very satisfied. I haven't gone more
than an hour or two without internet for a long time(excluding the ice
storm(two days)). I often get up to 200 K bytes/sec downloading(usually on
Sunday mornings) but I average around 100 K bytes/sec. I also have a static
IP address. I have heard differing stories around town about Media One but
the guy who sits next to me says that its pretty reliable.
If you are interested in getting broadband or DSL, I would try to find
someone that lives in your area that uses one of them and get their opinion.
I think users opinions vary greatly from area to area and from ISP to
ISP.....

Subject: [ale] Broadband vs DSL
Heyla all, me again.
My SO wants me to ask which is better, broadband or
DSL, and I'd like to know the same, and also, which is
the most stable, and does this vary from company to
company?
