Ok, since you asked ;) 

I have tried several Linux distributions, including RedHat, Slack, Mandrake, 

Debian, and SuSE. SuSE was by far the least trouble (meaning everything worked 

right out of the box.), while Slack was runner up. No doubt other people will

have differing opinions.

By all means, get a CD distribution. It saves countless hours of frustration.

I think you can get the latest SuSE version for $25 or so from Microcenter,

etc., and it's a full GUI install now. Earlier versions came with an nice book

that answered a lot of technical questions. I don't know if the latest version

also has the book.
