A couple of questions need to be asked.
1)How much of the site is served from static web pages/files?
2)How heavily taxed is the mysql database?
3)If the site is mostly dynamic, how complex are scripts to generate
the pages?
An Example:
Slashdot - 10-11 gigs of traffic a day, 3 webserver(P-450), 1 database
server(2xP450), 1 image server(P450), 1 ad box(P45). 50-60% dynamic html.
As long as your site is not hitting the database really hard or using overly
complex scripts, one machine would probably be fine. I would get SCSI hard
drives and a decent processor (PII 450 or greater). Get a good amount of
RAM(256-512M). I would put the database and the html pages on different
drives. You might even look into using some RAID if there is going to be
lots of disk access that can't be cached.
