I've got Mindspring DSL, and am using this package:

http://www.davin.ottawa.on.ca/pppoe/pppoed0.44.tgz

If I remember correctly I got similar instructions when they installed. 

I just wasn't talking to the right people, as it turns out.  This

package

works just fine.
