Yes it is odd. I got rid of it querying the domain
server externally by changing /etc/hosts.allow|deny
files, but it still continued to query the gateway
server for DNS lookup. I suppose I'll setup a DNS
server on the gateway to fix these problems. I
assumed that if I wasn't using hostnames I could get
away without having one.

That's what I thought originally. Before I configured
IP Masquerading rules I could telnet to my box. The
internal boxes couldn't get out, and the gateway could
see the internet. Once I configure the rules the
internals could see the internet and telnet to the
gateway. But since my cable modem sucks and would go
down very often. That's when the trouble started.
When the link was down the internal boxes couldn't get
to the gateway and vice versa.
