There's a free IDE called RHIDE with a very nice debugging interface. It's a
clone of the old Turbo C++ IDE, but it uses the GNU stuff. There's also a port
of the Metrowerks Code Warrior IDE that uses gcc.
I used to hate GDB too, but now I more or less worship it. It's been responsible
for locating several bugs in my class assignments this semester... I recommend
giving it another try. Once one gets over its initial bitchiness, it's a
remarkably well designed tool.
