Have you checked that the CD-ROM IDE cable is properly seated?

I have them mounting okay now and I di a backup of a directory
and I can mount the cd on either drive now. Not sure how I fixed it since
I tried so many things. But I think it was hardware. I juggled around the
postitions of the drives. This also fixed another problem so it must have been
hardware. This thing has been and continues to be a real pain.
The things I am still struggling with are:
1) still can't play written audion CD's on my regular home CD player
or car CD player, although they work for my computer CDROM.
I've read that this could just be a media problem and to try maybe
other/better media. Gotta get to the store first.
Might CDR CD's be better than CDRW CD's for this purpose?
2) I'd like to do fairly large scale backups on a CD. I can do a
successful backup if I first do
mkisofs -r -o cd_image tex (to make image of my latex directory)
and then
cdrecord -v speed=1 dev=0,0,0 -data cd_image
but this only works if you have twice the disk space!
So I tried
mkisofs -R -q -print-size tex (it gives back 28295)
mkisofs -r tex | cdrecord speed=1 dev=0,0,0 tsize=28295 -data -
and everything starts out okay but it quits with errors midway through.
I'm blanking a CD right now so I can't replicate the errors, sorry.
let me know if anything looks wrong here. I'm at a loss. This thing is
kind of working but the two reasons I bought it for are non-functional
at this point so I am still losing the battle. :(
thanks
Marc
