I'm using pppd alone for demand dialing under Slackware 7.0, and it
works quite nicely.

Diald will do custom filtering for what kinds of packets will or will
not bring up/keep up the line, which pppd doesn't do(at least not under
Linux). For practical purposes, I haven't missed it.
