Sorry to follow up on my own question, but I thought of another
possibly relevant factor.
We have some clients with real IP addresses (ie, not 198.162.x.x) and
some are masqueraded because we ran out of assigned addresses. But
both types of machines are on the same network. So when I ping a
machine, it goes over the wire to the masquerader, then over the same
wire to the router. Coming back the ping goes over the wire twice,
too.
I wonder if it is possible that the linux client hears it the first
time and tries to be clever and attempts to bypass the masquerader?
