The rsh is unrelated. It requires a .rhosts file in your home dir
(mode 600) listing who is allowed to use the r* commands.

If you are not asking it to be mounted Read/Only that could be the problem.
While Linux is nice enough to simply mount it R/O, most UNIX systems will
fail fatally.
You also might try to mount a different file system R/W (with the appropriate
entry in exports). After changing the /etc/exports file you need to tell
nfsd and/or mountd. An easy way is to restart them. Check the log files
in /var/log or /var/adm.
Please let me know what the problem turns out to be.
