dump is entirely different from dumpe2fs. Maybe you don't have the
dump package installed? Redhat included it at least as recently as
RH6.0. I presume they still provide it. The fifth field tells dump how
frequently a file system should be backed up.

Subject:        [ale] What does 5th field of fstab do?
Can someone please explain exactly what the fifth field of the etc/fstab file does? I have found very little documentation on it. A few older texts suggest that it isn't used; however, I've noticed that my redhat box turns the setting on for filesystems registered for checks by fsck (the sixth field.)
The man page says this field is used by the dump program. Unfortunately, I don't seem to have a dump program. I do have a dumpe2fs program which I'm assuming is the latest version of dump. I am not at all clear as to what it does.
If anyone could answer the following questions, it would be a great help:
1. Is dumpe2fs run on filesystems with a value of '1' in the fifth field of fstab?
2. If so, what does it do? Why is it necessary? (in layman's terms)
3. When is it run?
4. Can it only be run on ext2 filesystems?
5. What are the guidelines for determining whether it should be enabled?
Perplexed in Atlanta,
-Robert Hoffman
