Nope, security had nothing to do with it. 

Network Solutions has finally given up a lot of it's control over several

standard Internet TLDs (.com, .net, .org). This means that you no longer

have to use a large, slow, inefficient, customer-hostile company like

Network Solutions if you want to register a domain in one of those TLDs.

There are several other choices now, most of which are young, immature,

and still figuring out how to offer service.

So, the WHOIS server your whois client is using is most likely set to

query whois.internic.net, which now only holds basic information about

the domain (domain name, registrar, appropriate whois server, and the

authoritative name servers for that domain). For example:

   Domain Name: SHORTY.COM

   Registrar: NETWORK SOLUTIONS, INC.

   Whois Server: whois.networksolutions.com

   Referral URL: www.networksolutions.com

   Name Server: NS0.SHORTY.COM

   Name Server: NS1.SHORTY.COM

   Name Server: NS1.COMSTAR.NET

   Name Server: NS2.COMSTAR.NET

   Name Server: TERTIARY.YAK.NET

   Updated Date: 15-nov-1999

If you want further information (eg; all of the information you used to get

when you did a WHOIS query) you should then use the whois server at

the appropriate registrar, in this case Network Solutions 

(whois.networksolutions.com)- 

   whois -h whois.networksolutions.com shorty.com

Not all domains are hosted by Network Solutions anymore. As the new

registrars begin to offer better service (and as their domain renewal

fees come due) people are moving away from Network Solutions. Here are

a couple of domains I registered with other registrars (to give examples

of how other registrar information shows up):

   Domain Name: BASF-NIGERIA.COM

   Registrar: REGISTER.COM, INC.

   Whois Server: whois.register.com

   Referral URL: www.register.com

   Name Server: NS0.SHORTY.COM

   Name Server: NS1.SHORTY.COM

   Updated Date: 08-dec-1999

   Domain Name: TIMASY.COM

   Registrar: THE NAME IT CORP.

   Whois Server: whois.nameit.net

   Referral URL: www.nameit.net

   Name Server: NS0.SHORTY.COM

   Name Server: NS1.SHORTY.COM

   Updated Date: 04-jan-2000

There are versions of the whois program that will look at the whois

server that is returned and will then query the appropriate server.

The version of whois that comes with the unstable release of Debian

appears to do this.
