I've used Corel on a 486 before and it was really slow on the install. Very
similar to what you described. Turns out that the problem was the CD-ROM that I
was using. 486s aren't very fast to start with but most of them usually had
very slow cd-roms in them as well. 2X were common and 4X cd-roms were about the
best. Try using a faster cd-rom for the install and you'll get much better
performance.
The scenariou about being horribly slow on the machine sounds strange. The only
time I have had something like that happen was when the system was misreporting
the ram and it was recognizing only 8MB of ram instead of the 64 that I had.
