Martin,
I just got a copy of Corel Linux last night and I was wondering if you might
tell me about your install experience.
I've been running RH5.2 for about a year now as my file/print server for my
Winboxes at home. It's running on an old 120Mhz/486 just fine, but I would
like to keep everything current. So I have been thinking about upgrading to
RH6.1. But I am trying different flavors of Linux now just to see what is
different between them before I upgrade my server.
I tried installing Corel last night on a different PC and after about 3
hours finally had to give up. The installation program is PAINFULLY slow!
I mean minutes to display a popup window. Just getting to the drive
partitioning options was taking over 40 minutes, yet alone trying to do
anything. Just moving the mouse will start the CD spinning. And I am not
talking about selecting anything, just moving the pointer! At one point,
the mouse quit responding. To fix this I needed to recreate the boot disk
and start the install process again.
I like the GUI for the install, but if this is normal performance, I fear
the Corel will lose big time on this. I do have to admit that the machine I
am trying to install it on is not anywhere near bleeding edge, but it's
better than my current sever. But isn't that Linux's claim that it doesn't
need massive power to run? It's a Pentium 133Mhz, 16MRam and only 850MHD.
So I'm not even sure I can install Corel on this. I just don't know because
I have not been able to finish any portion of the install yet. This is just
my testing box I am using just to make sure I can get the new version
running before I perform the upgrade.
Thanks
