Of course, saying --with-gnu-as is only a good thing
if you are actually -using- Gnu as.
It looks to me like your problem is that gcc is generating
assembler directives that aren't understood by your
cross-assembler. You could try to configure Gnu as
to be the appropriate cross-assembler. If that doesn't
work, you'll probably have to figure out how to make
gcc drive your existing cross-assembler properly. That
is likely to be a lot more work than just using the
Gnu assembler.
