"Embedded system" is a blurred phrase these days :) If you mean Linux
running on a true microcontroller, check out:
www.uclinux.com - port of linux to 68K series microcontrollers w/o MMUs.
Rt-control Inc. makes a SIMM (3.5"x1") based on a 68EZ328 microcontroller.
It runs on other 683XX ucontrollers and ports to others (Motorola Coldfire,
i960) are in the works.
There are also multiple X86-based projects using flash/rom disks
(some even have IDE interfaces) out there now. For example
emjembedded.com/linux/
which has a distribution that runs on a DIMM-size 486 w/16Mb DRAM and
16Mb IDE flash. A Linux box on a 1.5"x2.7" board (with ethernet & VGA
modules available)
