I haven't tried an embedded system per se, however, I have done some
experimenting with using a linux box to turn some solid state relays on
and off (this is called "stupid 386 tricks") using the parallel port, and
I can send or post info if there is interest. It basically involves
compiling a kernel without parport support and writing a short prog to
turn on/off the 8 data lines of a parport.
Also, you might want to contact the proprietor of empeg.com, as he had
developed an embedded linux system for playing MP3's in a car.
