Just wanted to notify everyone that my modem is connected and dialing out
fine.
When I left you, my gnome/RH6.0 setup was locking up during my attempts to
configure pppd.
So, I scrapped it and installed Caldera Open Linux 2.3. It was a much
smoother install, especially in terms of adding users and monitor
configuration.
I wish I could tell you what the probelms were before on RH6.0 or even
Caldera before I got it working, but I don't know for sure.
This is what I think happened:
I never had these three things configured correctly
> com port: now at ttyS2, with com port on modem set at 3 (did have it at
ttyS1, com 2)
> ELN/ in front of my username (necessary for Earthlink dial up)
> correct modem initialization string. I'm using ATZ now, was using
ATS11=40,
I think I got the wrong string from the material accompanying the modem.
With ATS11=40 all I get is "modem initializing" and it stays that way in
Caldera, but in RH6.0, it would dial in just fine.
Thanks for everyone's help. I'm enjoying being connected with Linux and a
little bit freer from M$.
