I get this when I hook up w/ mindspring using the default setup.
Here's what I do (redhat 5.2 and 6.1):
Edit /etc/sendmail.cf and change the following 2 directives:
# my official domain name
# ... define this only if sendmail cannot automatically determine your domain
#Dj$w.Foo.COM
Djlocalhost.mindspring.com
# "Smart" relay host (may be null)
DSsmtp.mindspring.com
restart sendmail
/etc/rc.d/init.d/sendmail stop
/etc/rc.d/init.d/sendmail start
