I don't know the answer, but grub has changed drastically so depending
on the book you are reading and the OS you are working from, those could
be completely different versions of grub.  Plus the genius people at
grub decided to call grub2 before the grub version numbers were at 2.0.
 Some of the late v1.9x versions are grub2.  Genius, right?

So - Redhat 6.x books are based on the 2.6 kernels and old versions of
grub.  Redhat v7 books are based on grub2.

Debian and Ubuntu grub versions - I don't remember when grub2 started.
None of my 12.04 and newer systems use grub1, I can say that.

This group has a very limited readership. Might be better to ask on the
larger, general list.  In fact, yours is the first message on this group
in over a year.
